My dimensional mixed media work is a combination of video, sculpture , paintings, drawings, or prints that addresses humanities various levels of integration with nature, our origins, and the cosmos. Scientific discoveries by instruments like the Hubble Telescope and deep sea exploration vehicles amaze me, and impact my place in the world. I synthesize these elements to explore ideas that arise from new understandings of our natural world.
My attraction to bold colors was shaped by my childhood in India and later as an adult when I saw Rothko's paintings. They reminded me of red and orange saris, and the bold vibrancy of life in India. With that as a reference, I choose color, form, time, and texture based on my past travels and align/contrast them with present discoveries.
Resin in particular I use for its versatility. It's a flat painter's medium, and a sculptors dimensional genie. Various materials are incorporated into this primordial soup to build positive and negative spatial planes, allowing multiple surfaces to coalesce into ethereal forms. Video gives me time, drawing and printing give me immediate expression, and sculpture gives me space. I use all these elements to further my inquiry.
I allow the materials to speak to me, letting them have their own voice, to add to my thoughts, and finally the viewers. …...more
