(和文は英文の下ご参照ください。) Lecture-concert by T M Hoffman ... a portion from a solo performance of Raag Bhairavi in 8-beat tala on Japanese classical 13-stringed instrument koto, with electronic tabla & tambura background. Showcasing versatility in koto playing style innovations using fingers, 3 plectra (tsume), cello bow, and revised spoons to produce melody. Left hand is used to press strings down to smoothly raise pitch, and also to pluck rhythm (as in chikari strings of sitar). These innovations were supported in a joint 18-month R & D program (2006~2008) of Indo-Japanese Music Exchange Association IJMEA and American Institute of Indian Studies AIIS, and have been presented in major venues, broadcasts etc in India, Japan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Singapore, USA, UK; also in workshops & interactive concerts in many schools. Another Japanese instrument - the flute shakuhachi - was in 1992 certified for Indian classical music under Bhatkhande Music College (after completing 5-yr Visharad degree) and Sangeet Natak Akademi. Innovations with shakuhachi, koto, and vocal (including Japanese poetry in Hindustani music) have graced major venues and broadcasts in Asia, USA and beyond.
