A short video showing a few of the processes while making the limited edition of 'Stardust' by Neil Gaiman, illustrated by Charles Vess. The Lettered edition of 'Stardust' is bradel bound with vellum on the boards and dark blue leather on the spine. All three page edges have been gilded, and the front and back boards can be tied together with gold ribbons. The endpapers are made from handmade marbled paper, designed and commissioned especially for this special limited edition. Internally, the books are letterpress printed on flat sheets (8 page sections), which are then folded, gathered and sewn before having blank pages and tissue guards tipped in for the 9 illustrations. Right at the very end of the binding process, the illustrations are tipped onto these pages as plates. The letterpress printing is from polymer plates by Hand and Eye Letterpress (London) on their Heidelberg SB cylinder press. There are around 80 processes or operations in the binding of this book (not including the box), this video shows a few seconds of just a handful of them. But it gives you a small insight into the work involved and the journey the books take as they're being bound. This edition comes in a half bound leather solander box which takes roughly the same amount of time to make as the book! Limited to 26 copies and signed by the author and artist. www.lyrasbooks.com Video by Rich at Cave Bear Films www.instagram.com/cave_bear_films
