If you care about pipeline security, yesterday’s news about the Nord Stream pipeline breach definitely got your attention. The Nord Stream pipeline system connects Russian gas supply to German distribution systems. Most of the pipelines are under the Baltic sea along the coast of Sweden, Denmark and a number of eastern bloc countries. On Sep 27 gas started bubbling up to the surface indicating a very suspicious leak in one of the lines. In fact a german source told their newspaper that “We can’t imagine a scenario that isn’t a targeted attack” So what does this mean for operators? The 3 ways we want to secure operations include asset visibility, risk mitigation and incident response. We want to see as much as possible about what’s happening, we want to deploy technology that mitigates our risk of an incident, and we want to have a plan to respond when an incident occurs.
