Inspired by a Savannah City Hall exhibition Law’s Murphys: Works by Christopher Murphy, Jr. from the W. W. Law Art Collection, this talk examines Murphy’s lengthy artistic engagement with the architecture and people of Savannah. The seven works in the exhibition will be placed in the broader context of Murphy’s life and career. The talk will also address how these works fit within the arts and preservation scene in Savannah in the 20th century and consider why they were acquired by noted historian and preservationist W. W. Law. About the Speaker: Courtney A. McNeil is Chief Curator and Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs at Telfair Museums, with responsibility for overseeing all of the organization’s programmatic activities, including collections, exhibitions, and education. She directs a cohesive schedule of 15-20 exhibitions and accompanying educational programming annually with the goal of fulfilling the institutional mission of Telfair Museums, engaging diverse audiences, and aligning with the organization’s overall strategic vision. Ms. McNeil has served in Telfair’s curatorial department since 2006. She holds a B.A. from Georgetown University and an M.A. from the Courtauld Institute of Art, in London.
