In the movie "Office Space" the whole management uses indirect talk. In this scene, exaggerated use of "indirect talk" makes Lumberg come across as too submissive, almost slimy. Too much indirectness can make you come across as slimy. Especially among people who speak very directly. The problem here is not just the verbal production of course, but the whole nonverbals. On the other hand, too direct talk, especially when giving tasks, can break rapport. In Social Power I recommend what I call "directly-indirect", which is a sweet spot between the two.
