One of the most acclaimed contemporary Mexican composers, Dr. Samuel Zyman (b. 1956) has served on the faculty at the Juilliard School since 1986. His work Two Motions in One Movement was commissioned by the Music Teachers’ Association of California in 1996 and received its premiere in the same year, at a competition for young pianists as part of the organization’s annual convention. As suggested by the title, this composition juxtaposes a flamboyant, rock- and jazz-influenced section with a lyrical interlude reminiscent of Debussy. A fiesta of rhythm, the fast-slow-fast work celebrates its exuberant energy together with its imaginative expressions.
