Albert Dumont, an Algonquin Elder from Kitigan Zibi and Poet Laureate of Ottawa, spoke beautifully about Ankosé - the connections between all living things, the sky, land, and water. He spoke of our connection and dependency upon the life-giving fire of the sun and the connection we all share as creations of Mother Earth. Ankosé is an Anishinaabemowin word that emerged in conversation with Algonquin Elders and Knowledge Keepers from the unceded Algonquin territory where the Gallery is situated. Meaning “everything is connected,” Ankosé is a call to action for us as an institution and for all who engage with us (virtually or in person), to recognize the limitless connections that exist beyond the frame. This word is at the heart of the NGC’s new purpose.
