Ketamine crisis | Steph Massey at Delamere speaks with This Morning

The UK is currently experiencing a ketamine addiction crisis, and recent figures show it's disproportionately impacting young people. According to the Home Office, consumption of ketamine has risen by 85% this past year, two thirds of which are 16-24 year olds, and the number of under-18s entering treatment for ketamine has increased by 173% in the last five years. Ketamine is quickly becoming the new cannabis. It is widely accessible due to its low cost and availability on social media, it's sometimes used as an entry point for people to try other harmful substances, and the use of this type of 'high' is now becoming more normalised. The pace of this change is particularly shocking. One year ago, it was very rare for us at Delamere to treat people for ketamine as a primary reason. Today, enquiries and admissions for ketamine are commonplace, and we've seen a 275% increase in the last six months alone, 87% of which are under 30 years old. Our Head of Clinical Care, Stephanie Massey told ITV This Morning's Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard that being a parent in this situation is difficult, but there is an urgent need for parents to educate themselves about the harms of this drug. This will help foster compassionate conversations, without judgement. This is core to our approach here at Delamere. The addictive behaviour is the outcome of a much deeper and unresolved issue. If we are to Grow Beyond Addiction, there needs to be more conversations, awareness, and education to help young people in particular. Recovery is possible. Thank you ITV for having Steph on the programme to discuss this important issue. #addiction #ketamine
