For every challenge we face, interpersonal or otherwise, we have a choice between two basic responses: reactivity or receptivity. In this moving and engaging talk, singer-songwriter Maria Carter compares her observations of the natural world with an examination of human behavior, and arrives at the conclusion that we have a cultural bias toward reactivity. She shares insights from her experiences as a divorcee and cancer survivor, and encourages us to consider choosing receptivity over reactivity in a proportion more in alignment with the example provided by Nature. And at the end, she breaks into song - a Broadway tune, no less. As she continues a 5-year journey with cancer, Maria explores the nature of healing. Her own research into quantum physics, medicine and mindfulness, as well as her 15-year career as a musician and writer provide the basis of her creative philosophical perspective. In addition to her previously published albums and poems, she is currently working on a new musical project that incorporates a variety of artistic expression, including visual art, video, web design and spoken word, to be released on her own independent label at the end of 2014. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) Music "cafe connection" by morgantj featuring Morusque Available at ccMixter.org http://ccmixter.org/files/morgantj/18947 Under CC BY license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b...
