The World Health Organization said the monkeypox virus has spread to more than 20 countries. Therefore, they urge nations to increase their lookout for infectious monkeypox disease as outbreaks grow. Monkeypox Virus Outbreak Cases by Countries The World Health Organization says that there have been about 200 confirmed cases and more than 100 possible cases of monkeypox outside of the countries where it is usually found. Monkeypox has been confirmed in 118 people in the European Union, 90 people in the U.K., and 9 people in the U.S. In North America, the United States has found nine people with monkeypox in seven different states. Health officials in Canada have found and confirmed 16 cases of monkeypox. All of these cases were found in the province of Quebec. Also, the Philippines is working on naming specific places where possible monkeypox cases can be kept separate. The outbreaks are caused by a milder strain of the virus from West Africa, and most people get better in a few weeks. It is related to smallpox but is not as bad as smallpox. 2. In 1958, the virus was found in monkeys used for research. Then, in 1970, the first case of monkeypox in a person was reported. 3. WHO has warned that the 200 cases of monkeypox may just be the start of another pandemic. 4. The first monkeypox case in the U.K. was reported in May. Since then, 90 people have been infected with the virus. 5. So far, 98 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been found in Spain. Health official says most victims were homosexual males. 6. Portugal has 74 confirmed cases, health officials announced Friday. All are men, mostly under 40. 7. People with monkeypox usually have a fever, muscle pain, sores, and chills. 8. Three to six percent of people who get the virus die. The majority of people get better in three to four weeks. 9. There is no specific way to treat monkeypox right now. However, patients usually need to stay in a specialized hospital. It helps prevent the infection from spreading, and general symptoms can be treated. How does the Monkeypox Virus Spread? Monkeypox is not spread through sexual contact. However, the virus can spread when a person with a sore stays in close contact with another person for a long time. It can also spread through body fluids, soiled bed sheets, clothes, or respiratory droplets if a person has a sore in their mouth. Monkeypox Virus Symptoms: The virus usually begins with symptoms similar to the flu. Like, muscle aches chills headaches exhaustion swollen lymph nodes It then turns into rashes on the body. Finally, it looks like raised bumps that turn into pus-filled blisters that dry out and fall off.
