Author Denise Kiernan, will discuss her latest book, the story of Sarah Josepha Hale, who in the 19th century campaigned for decades to make real an annual day of thanks. Working at the helm of the American magazine Godey’s Lady’s Book, Hale published Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and others; and never stopped pushing the leaders of her time to officially recognize and celebrate gratitude. The book includes an enthralling supporting cast of characters including Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln—the man who finally granted Hale’s wish—Sojourner Truth, Walt Whitman, and others. Alongside the story of Hale, Kiernan brings to the fore the stories of Indigenous peoples, immigrant communities, women’s rights activists, abolitionists, and others.
