How to Fix the VMware Workstation The Virtual Machine Appears to Be in Use Error Message

If you are running VMware Workstation and your host computer gets rebooted while virtual machines are Workstation itself is still running, you may get an error when trying to open or start a VM that looks like this: This virtual machine appears to be in use. If this virtual machine is not in use, press the "Take Ownership" button to obtain ownership of it. Otherwise, press the "Cancel" button to avoid damaging it. Then when you click on Take Ownership, you might get a message like this: Could not open virtual machine "VM name and path": Taking ownership of this virtual machine failed. The virtual machine is in use by an application on your host computer. Configuration file: VM path. Remove "VM Name" from the library? Fortunately, this is an easy fix by simply deleting the .lck folders for that VM. You might want to back them up before deleting them just in case something doesn't go right.
