Emergency Treatment Center– Adaptive Reuse in Healthcare Design Jury Meeting September 9, 2023 In 2023, the Epidemic Urbanism Initiative called a design competition based on healthcare in the categories of Community Health Center and Emergency Treatment Center. Submitting teams were asked to focus on adaptive reuse of local sites and spaces, and to include members from design and healthcare at various stages of their careers. This video features the Emergency Treatment Center category, with short design videos by the finalists, observations by the jury, and reflections by the commentators. The EUI received close to 70 submissions from teams in Canada, China, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Uganda, the UAE, and the U.S.A. This is tremendous proof of how collaborative projects can create real architectural solutions to caring for the wellbeing of communities in every part of the globe. The talented, creative people working in design fields and healthcare are also leading the way in creating healthcare sites suited to the climate and environment, available resources, cultural needs, and social expectations of their communities. Students, academic instructors, practicing architects, medical professionals and administrators, and other skilled team members worked together to submit meaningful projects. In this meeting, shortlisted projects in the Emergency Treatment Center category are discussed by chair Irene Hwang (U.S.A.); jurors Frankie Lim (Singapore), Lynne Dearborn (U.S.A.), and Femke Feenstra (Netherlands); commentators Richard Jackson (U.S.A.), and Cristiana Caira (Sweden); and EUI Co-Founder and Director Mohammad Gharipour (U.S.A.) and EUI Program Coordinator Angela Andersen (Canada).
