当トンネルは全長10.7kmの東海北陸自動車道飛騨トンネルの避難用トンネルですが、飛騨トンネルに先立つ先進坑としても重要な役割を担いました。 東海北陸自動車道としても文字通り「最後の難関」と呼ばれたこの工事は1996年10月に着工以来、完成までに約11年を要しました。 最大土被り（どかぶり）1,000mを超える未知の地山をTBMで掘り進みましたが、途中、断層破砕帯（だんそうはさいたい）や高圧湧水帯（こうあつゆうすいたい）に遭遇しました。 自然の驚異を幾度となく見せつけられ、たびたびTBM掘削を中断せざるを得ない状況となりました。 貫通まで300mという段階では高圧の地圧によりTBMが押し潰されるという事態にも遭遇しました。こうしたなかを最新の技術と不屈の精神で完成させることができました。 This tunnel is an evacuation tunnel for the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway Hida Tunnel with a total length of 10.7 km, but also played an important role as an advanced pit preceding the Hida Tunnel. This construction, which was literally called the "last difficulty" for the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway, took about 11 years to complete since construction started in October 1996.
