Through Arai’s experience, the configuration of the Arai helmet shell has evolved to allow the shell to slide over obstacles that Arai refers to as “Glancing Off. This is why Arai believes that a shell that is involved in an impact should be round, smooth, and strong. At the same time, it is also important to manage airflow for ventilation, stability, and to enhance the rider’s endurance and concentration. This requires some projections on the shell of the helmet. The projections that Arai utilize are not integral to the shell. They are designed and mounted to detach when subjected to forces beyond normal use.
