Abandoned Cabin In Arizona' Sonoran Desert Preserve
Who was Farley? Maybe a hermit, or maybe a rancher with a small herd of cattle, but regardless, he chose this remote spot to build a little house and enjoy desert life. In the late 1940's, a strong lightning storm developed in the preserve. Farley's wife was standing in the doorway of the cabin and was struck and killed. This section of the preserve was formerly used as part of the Barry M. Goldwater bombing range, and a permit is required to pass. Also, there are signs posted to warn against illegal aliens and smuggling activities, so it's a good idea to keep an eye out--though a ranger told me these types try to stay as unnoticeable as possible.
